1. Gather your supplies. You’ll need a new sink strainer, a pair of pliers and plumber’s putty.
2. Remove the pipes that are connected to your old kitchen sink basket strainer. Start removing the fittings and once they’re out, use your pair of pliers to get rid of the old strainer nut.
3. If the nut won’t go, you may also try to cut it first with a hack saw or any tool of the same function. Once removed, simply pull the damaged strainer from the sink.
4. Before the installation of the new unit, you have to clean the sink area. Make sure that any build-up of sediments that came from the old strainer is removed.
5. Get your new basket strainer. Spread the parts on the kitchen counter for quick access. Loosen the retainer screws.
6. Now get your plumber’s putty and create a rope that’s uniform in width. Wrap the putty around the new strainer’s base, specifically on the lip’s underside.
7. Position the new strainer into the sink hole carefully. Push it down to make the plumber’s putty stick to the sink.
8. Now check under the sink. Install the flexible washer followed by the metal washer onto the sink strainer body. Hold the two together in place.
9. Once done, start threading the retainer in order to create an airtight and watertight connection. Use your hand to tighten the screws. You may use your screwdriver or a pair of pliers to finally secure the screws. Don’t over tighten them so that the rubber washer won’t get squeezed out of the kitchen sink strainer.
10. The last step of this DIY guide is the re-installation of the pipes. After you’ve put everything back in place, turn on the tap and check for any signs of leaking.
